This week we have a very special Thriving Thursday written by @zizou.adventure.ears (Instagram)! They will be doing a series of articles on adventuring safely with your furry BFF.
Taking your best friend on adventures can be very rewarding for the both of you but before you go you need to make sure you are prepared. Here are a few simple ways to make sure you are set to go before hitting the trails.
Always check the weather conditions and prepare accordingly. Is it raining? Find your waterproof gear. Is there a thunderstorm? Stay home! If it’s going to be warm make sure you pack enough water for you and your furry friend, I always say it’s better to have too much water on a hike. Especially if you live where we do in the dry desert. I also pack a bandana or snood to wet with water to help keep my pup cool.
Water is essential to life and needs to be offered frequently to your pup even when the weather is wet or cold. This is something that is extremely important for any type of adventure.
Next thing to remember is snacks! What is a good adventure without snacks? Not only is fuel important for you, it’s essential for your pet. We personally love DroolingMonsters Fruit Milk Chews, Osispantry Jerky and Beaver Tail as well as HappyTails Bakery Chicken Jerky. These are perfect for a little pick-me-up on the trails or out on the water. We take a 5-10 minute break every hour to eat a little and recoup our energy.
And lastly be aware of the plant and wildlife in the area you are exploring. Dogs get into everything and the last thing you want is an upset stomach or an animal bite.
Be prepared and enjoy! Adventuring with your four legged friend can be very rewarding. It strengthens your bond and allows you to see the world together.
